Breast Cancer Awareness

Anchor Tag

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the most-recent statistics, more than 300,000 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, and more than 40,000 will have died.

With these numbers in mind, I think this is an excellent time to remind everyone about ways to detect breast cancer early, and to engage good habits that may help you avoid it altogether.

The Best Plan Is to Make a Plan…

Know Your Symptoms and Signs

Early warning signs of breast cancer may be the discovery of a new lump or a change in the breast tissue, shape, or skin.

Get a Clinical Breast Exam

A clinical breast exam is performed by a qualified nurse or doctor. A healthcare professional will check for lumps or other physical changes in the breast that may need to be investigated.

Mammogram, Thermography, Ultrasound and MRI

A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas and changes. Thermography shows heat changes in the tissues. If indicated, a specialist may further suggest an ultrasound scan or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for a deeper, more thorough analysis.

Healthy Habits

Leading a healthy lifestyle can help you reduce your risk factors significantly for breast cancer and other illnesses. Although you cannot prevent cancer, some habits that can help reduce your risk are:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay physically active
  • Eat fruits and vegetables
  • Do not smoke
  • Limit alcohol consumption

I hope you make a plan, include all of the above in it, and stick to it. Any time you would like to discuss supplements and herbs for breast health or nutrition and weight loss through your life, I will happily be here for you.
