It’s Detox Time

It’s too bad that Labor Day signifies the end of summer, because even though we get shorter days and longer nights, the weather tends to be as pleasant as it gets all year. But once the grills are put away and the kids are sent back to school, it’s time for the fall routine to begin.

I always make part of my post-Labor Day routine a way to help my body labor less... I do a good detox.

Fall is a great time to purify and cleanse, and there are so many ways to get it done and fit it into your life. You can even do it as a family – if you get everyone in on it, it’s more fun, it goes much easier, and you can make it a traditional fall family routine.

It’s really easy to get your body back on track after a summer of barbecue, fried foods and ice cream. It’s as simple as picking one or two items from the list below and sticking to them. Each time you purify and cleanse, you’ll feel better, and you’ll be adding more steps in no time, until you’re “eating clean” every day.

Dive into the deep end from the get-go, if you want, by taking all the steps at once. Or join an organized cleanse class. Either option will have you feeling better, shedding pounds and looking fantastic faster than you may have thought possible!

Try any or all of these:

  • Cut back the summertime cocktails. Alcohol is like a super-charged sugar bomb, slowing down your ability to maintain a healthy insulin level, which leads to more harmful belly fat.

  • Make a healthy smoothie every morning for breakfast. You can take it with you.

  • Drink water – half your weight in ounces of water is a rule of thumb, but at the very least drink 50 ounces (1.5 liters) daily.

  • When packing your lunch (and you should), keep it healthy, and portion control it.

  • Eat 6-8 servings of vegetables daily. Raw veggies and hummus are a great snack.

  • Stay away from those high-calorie and high-fat lattes.

  • Make a healthy dinner, keep it portion-controlled, and keep it light if eating after 6 pm.

  • Look at serving sizes and stick to a single portion.

  • Make every Sunday a prep day for the week ahead - menu, shop, cook, freeze, and portion out for the week in containers that are ready to pack and go.

  • Invest $20 in a kitchen scale, which makes it a breeze to watch portions, and only prepare exactly what you need.

  • Look up portion sizes for your foods online, and then use your new scale to get the portions right.
