The Core 4 Revisited

I think we can all agree that the best way to good health includes a healthy diet, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. The pace of life these days often makes eating right a hassle, though, and even the best eating habits don’t always give you the absolutely essential nutrients you need.

I want to make sure I always get what my body needs to stay healthy. I also like to keep my life simple. Which is why I developed the idea of the Core 4.

The Core 4 provides me with the four building blocks of my supplement regimen. And though it is simple, and easy to follow, it can also be customized for anyone’s particular needs and lifestyle, from growing adolescents, to active adults, to people in their golden years.  Here are the basics:

  1. Fish Oil: Tried and tested, it is a cellular “must have.” This essential fatty acid (EFA) is the one thing I never forget to take. It has building power - in other words, the longer you take it, the more its benefits build. Fish oil guards against inflammation, and source is important, so buy the best you can afford. Anything is better than nothing, but I choose a cold water, small fish, heavy metal free capsule. Liquid is a better bang for your buck and is better absorbed. Either way, choose what is best for you.
  2. Multivitamin: A multi fills in all the spaces of our healthy diet. It combines your vitamins and minerals to a complete formula. Some people think that if your diet is good you don’t need supplements. That may have been true years ago. Unfortunately, our food is just not as nutrient-dense as it used to be.  We don’t always east the six veggies per day recommended by the FDA. So I consider a multi to be insurance that you get everything you need. The choices are vast, and I can help you make that choice.
  3. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory and vital to cellular health. It can also help stabilize our mood, and help our joints and muscles ache less. Sunlight is a primary source, but in New England, we only have 10 weeks out of the year during which we actually get substantial Vitamin D from the sun; and we slather up with sunscreen when we are outside during those weeks, which stops some of the Vitamin D from getting through our skin for absorption into our cells. A good oral source of Vitamin D takes care of the problem.
  4. Probiotics:  Digestion is key to absorbing nutrients from our foods. Healthy gut bacteria support your immune system, metabolism, and mood, just to mention a few. By taking a daily dose of probiotics, you keep your good gut bacteria count high.

Back to the idea of simple… Four supplements. But, as you read for each one, they come in many different forms, doses and configurations. Choosing the four that are best for you, and the other members of your family, can be a bit of a challenge. That’s why I’m here to help.
