Are Your Gut Bugs Bugging You?

“Wow!”

That’s usually the first thing I hear from people who come into Medicine World looking for probiotics, after they see that we have 2 coolers and 4 feet of top-to-bottom display space dedicated to them.

Then I always get the question, “Which one should I get?” And my answer is always another question, which is, “What do you want a probiotic to do for you?”

I ask because there are almost as many reasons for taking a probiotic as there are different brands and formulations of them. The top reasons tend to be:

•  For relief of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

•  To relieve chronic diarrhea or chronic constipation

•  To help strengthen immune systems against colds and flu

•  To replace gut bacteria after (and during) a course of anti-biotics

•  For relieving the bad effects of too much sugar and/or alcohol

•  Simply as part of a good healthy regimen like our Core 4

•  To offset/supplement the average American Diet

Taking care of all these things starts with your gut, and the bazillions of bacteria that are in it. Getting that gut bacteria starts at birth, and most of us get our first doses from mother’s milk. From that point on, everything that goes in your tummy or on your skin contributes to your gut bacteria population, good and bad. Your gut reactions are the best indicator of what’s right for you and which probiotics will keep your system running right.

Which brings me to allergies…

The news for the past several years has been filled with dire stories about allergies, and about the rise of adverse reactions to dairy, gluten, peanuts, shellfish, soy and more. We have also been hearing a lot about the rise of autism which, in many studies, is also tied to allergens.

Most people still don’t have to worry about these things, but for those who do, I am happy to say that, in addition to all the other probiotics we carry, we also have a wonderful line that is produced under the strictest anti-allergen conditions. Their facilities are set up to prevent the possibility of cross-contamination from wheat, nuts, fish and anything else that may be a problem for people susceptible to allergens.

We have these products, and many others, in capsules and chewable forms, with multiple strains of good bugs available. Whether allergens are a concern for you or not, we probably have something exactly right for your needs, and a good probiotic fit can make a huge change in how your tummy feels.

If your gut is bugging you, or not helping the way you want it to, come into Medicine World. After your “Wow!” come find me, and let’s find what’s right for you, together.
