Your heart works without conscious command, doing its job without you a giving it a thought. It beats in your chest every second, every minute, 24/7/365, form the moment your born, and will do so until…

As nurse, it is one of the first things I check when you’re not feeling well – simply by taking your pulse – to see how fast your life is ticking. But if you are like most people, you take it for granted… until you work it extra hard or something goes wrong.

Unless you are genetically pre-disposed, nothing really needs to go wrong with your heart, though, as long as you keep it, and your body as a whole, in good working order.

Anything you do to benefit your heart benefits your entire body, since your heart is the engine that drives the blood that keeps your body nourished with oxygen, nutrients, and disease-fighting cells. And though there are many things you can do to help keep your heart healthy, I am all about keeping it as simple and attainable as possible.

A healthy diet and moderate (at a minimum) exercise are givens. You cannot continually stuff low-benefit, sugar-laden, saturated-fat foods into your body and expect it to work well. And your heart is a muscle, much like any other in your body, so exercising it with at least 15-30 minutes of brisk walking every day is less a goal than a requirement for continued good health.

What else?

Well, I know that I have harped on this a bit, but keeping it simple for your heart is as simple as my recommended Core 4. Honestly, pretty much everything comes back to that. Here’s why it makes so much sense for your heart…

A multi-vitamin is broad spectrum, but you can get a targeted cardiovascular multi that gives you a bit more of the important heart nutrients. It has been suggested that heart failure and myocardial infarctions may be associated with antioxidant deficit, as well as increased myocardial stress. A multi that is rich in antioxidants, complex B vitamins, and their cofactors, supports cellular energy and also supports nerve conduction through minerals.

My current recommendation (I am always on the look-out for better): Bio-Cardiozyme Forte

Fish oil is hugely important for cardiovascular health, and I would use a fish oil here that includes curcumin (the active ingredient in the spice turmeric); NAC, glutathione, and Coenzyme Q10 (all antioxidants). Combining these with your fish oil saves you money and gives you great cardio coverage.

Finally, vitamin D and a probiotic support your immune system, and a healthy immune system decreases stress on your heart.

To wrap this up, I circle back to the first two suggestions: healthy eating and a decent amount of exercise. All the Core 4 in the world is going to do you little good if you sabotage it with bad food and a sedentary lifestyle. (There are also many alternatives to walking that will get you heart rate up.)

Eat well, exercise some, and add the Core 4 to your regimen. Your heart will love your for it!
